US Senate moves to limit Trump's Iran war powers

Lawmakers in the United States are set to vote on a resolution aimed at restricting President Donald Trump’s authority to continue military action against Iran without congressional approval.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said the vote would take place next week, stressing that Congress must reassert its constitutional role in decisions over war, especially amid heightened global tensions.

The move comes shortly after Trump announced a two-week ceasefire following weeks of conflict linked to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. His earlier threats of large-scale attacks drew strong criticism from Democrats, who argued such actions could violate international norms and escalate instability.

Democratic lawmakers, including Hakeem Jeffries, have pushed for limits on the administration’s military authority, calling for a permanent end to what they describe as an unnecessary conflict.

However, efforts to pass similar war powers resolutions have repeatedly failed, with Republicans—who hold narrow majorities in Congress—largely backing Trump’s approach.

The White House maintains that the president’s actions are lawful under his role as commander-in-chief, particularly in responding to perceived threats, setting up a continued clash between Congress and the administration over war authority.
