Italy's Meloni prioritises prices amid Mideast War

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Tuesday that controlling inflation and rising energy costs has become her immediate priority as the US-Israeli conflict with Iran continues to impact the global economy.

Speaking at a press conference, Meloni was asked whether measures to ease the effect of price increases caused by the Middle East war could affect Italy’s planned defence spending.

She said that while defence spending remains an absolute priority, the government must also respond to growing economic pressures.

Meloni stated that in the current international crisis, keeping prices and energy costs under control is essential to preventing inflation from slowing economic growth.

She warned that unchecked inflation could weigh heavily on Italy’s GDP growth and broader economic stability.

Her comments reflect growing concern across Europe over the economic fallout from tensions in the Middle East, particularly the effect of higher energy prices on households and businesses.
