Germany's Merz says Iran humiliating US as talks stall
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday that Iran’s leadership was humiliating the United States by drawing US officials into unsuccessful diplomatic efforts while negotiations remain stalled.
Speaking to students in the town of Marsberg, Merz said Iranian leaders were highly skilled at avoiding meaningful negotiations, referring to recent talks involving US officials in Islamabad that ended without results.
He said the situation was embarrassing for Washington and criticized the role of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in prolonging the crisis.
Merz also questioned the overall US strategy in the conflict with Iran, saying he could not see a clear path forward.
His remarks highlighted growing differences between Washington and some of its European NATO allies, tensions that have also been visible over issues such as Ukraine and broader foreign policy priorities.
The comments came as diplomatic efforts to ease the conflict between the United States and Iran continue to struggle, with no breakthrough yet in talks aimed at ending hostilities.
