Iran says nuclear deal ‘within reach' ahead of new round of US talks

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on February 24 that a nuclear agreement with the United States was “within reach,” days before a new round of negotiations between the two sides.

In a post on the social media platform X, Araghchi described the moment as a “historic opportunity” to reach an unprecedented deal that would address mutual concerns and serve shared interests. He stressed that an agreement was possible “only if diplomacy is given priority.”

Tehran and Washington are set to hold a third round of talks on Thursday in Geneva, following the resumption of negotiations earlier this month.

The discussions come amid heightened tensions in the region, including a significant US military buildup and warnings from President Donald Trump that military action could follow if no agreement is reached.

Iran has repeatedly warned it would respond decisively to any attack. On Monday, the foreign ministry said even a limited strike would be considered an act of aggression.

In his statement, Araghchi reiterated that Iran would “under no circumstances ever develop a nuclear weapon,” while maintaining its right to benefit from peaceful nuclear technology. He emphasized that Iran would defend its sovereignty if necessary.

Iran and the United States held five rounds of nuclear negotiations last year, but those efforts collapsed after an unprecedented attack by Israel on Iran sparked a 12-day conflict. The United States later carried out limited strikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities.

Iran responded at the time with drone and missile attacks on Israel and targeted the largest US military base in the Middle East, located in Qatar.

Tehran continues to deny seeking nuclear weapons, saying its uranium enrichment program is intended solely for civilian energy and research purposes.
