Japanese leaders press for world without nuclear weapons

Japan commemorated the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on Wednesday with a ceremony at Peace Memorial Park attended by about 55,000 people.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to a world without nuclear weapons, emphasizing the importance of preserving the memories of the bombing. Hiroshima Mayor Matsui Kazumi added 339 new names to the cenotaph, bringing the total to 349,246 victims, and urged global leaders to visit Hiroshima to understand the human cost of nuclear war.

The US dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima at 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, killing an estimated 140,000 people by the end of that year. With survivors now averaging over 86 years old, officials highlighted the urgency of passing on their stories to future generations.
