Japan Pledges $1.06bn in budget support to Bangladesh

Japan has committed $1.063 billion in financial support to Bangladesh, aimed at bolstering economic reforms, enhancing climate resilience, upgrading railway infrastructure, and supporting human resource development through scholarships.
According to Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, the support includes a $418 million Development Policy Loan to aid Bangladesh’s economic reforms and climate change adaptation efforts.
Additionally, Japan will provide a $641 million loan to upgrade the Joydevpur–Ishwardi railway line to a dual-gauge double-track system. A further $4.2 million will be granted for human development scholarships.
Three formal exchanges of notes were signed on these initiatives: one for the Development Policy Loan, another for the railway project, and a third for the scholarship grant.
The signing ceremony was attended by Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Japan Md Daud Ali and Japan’s Ambassador to Bangladesh Shinichi Saida, who signed the documents on behalf of their respective governments. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus witnessed the signing.
