US intercepts sanctioned vessel in Arabian Sea during Iran blockade
The US military said it intercepted a sanctioned merchant vessel in the Arabian Sea on Saturday as enforcement of a US-led blockade targeting Iranian energy exports continues to expand.
According to US Central Command, the ship identified as Sevan is part of a 19-vessel “shadow fleet” accused of transporting Iranian oil and gas products to international markets in violation of US sanctions.
The vessel was intercepted by a US Navy helicopter launched from the guided-missile destroyer USS Pinckney. Officials said the ship is now following orders to return toward Iran while under escort.
The interception marks the latest maritime enforcement action linked to Washington’s campaign to limit Iran’s energy exports and reduce its oil revenue amid ongoing regional tensions.
US authorities said the targeted fleet had previously been sanctioned by the US Department of the Treasury for helping transport billions of dollars worth of Iranian energy products, including propane and butane.
Since the blockade began, Central Command said 37 vessels have been redirected, highlighting the scale of US efforts to pressure Tehran through maritime restrictions.
