Trump signs order threatening tariffs on countries trading with Iran

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order warning that countries continuing trade with Iran could face new tariffs on goods exported to the United States. While the order does not set a specific rate, it cites a possible 25 percent tariff on imports from nations that directly or indirectly purchase goods or services from Iran.

The White House said the move reinforces an ongoing national emergency related to Iran’s nuclear activities, regional influence, and missile development. Trump has not issued a detailed public statement on the order but reiterated his stance that Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons while speaking aboard Air Force One.

The decision follows recent talks between senior US and Iranian officials in Oman after weeks of rising tensions. US officials described the discussions as constructive, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called them a positive start, with further meetings expected.

Alongside the executive order, the US State Department announced sanctions on 15 entities accused of trading Iranian oil and petrochemical products. Iran has not immediately responded to the latest measures but continues to insist its nuclear program is peaceful.

Iran remains under extensive international sanctions, yet maintains trade relations with more than 100 countries. China is its largest export partner, followed by Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey.

The executive order comes amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. Trump has warned of serious consequences if a deal is not reached, while also expressing optimism that diplomacy could still succeed.
