India will buy oil from Venezuela, not Iran: Trump
US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that India will begin buying crude oil from Venezuela rather than purchasing it from Iran, describing the arrangement as already agreed in concept. Trump made the comments to reporters aboard Air Force One as he travelled from Washington to Florida.
His remarks followed reports that the United States has told New Delhi it could soon resume purchases of Venezuelan oil to help replace some of its imports of Russian crude, which New Delhi has been reducing under Western pressure.
India has not been importing significant volumes of Iranian oil in recent years due to longstanding US sanctions on Tehran, and became a major buyer of discounted Russian crude after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 triggered Western restrictions on Moscow’s exports.
Trump also suggested that China could strike a deal with the United States to buy Venezuelan oil, though he did not provide details.
The move reflects shifting dynamics in global energy markets and US efforts to influence where major economies source their oil amid sanctions and geopolitical pressures.
