Saudi Arabia launches Bahrain shipping route amid Gulf trade disruptions

Saudi Ports Authority has introduced a new maritime link between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain as regional shipping routes face growing disruption due to escalating conflict in the Middle East.

The service, operated through MSC’s Gulf Shuttle, connects King Abdulaziz Port with Khalifa Bin Salman Port and offers capacity of up to 3,000 TEUs.

Shipping activity across the Gulf has been severely affected, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for around one-fifth of global oil flows, which remains constrained amid ongoing tensions.

The new route is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to strengthen regional logistics, improve supply chain resilience, and position itself as a major global trade hub linking Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Logistics experts say the service will help reduce transit times, ease congestion at land borders, and lower overall shipping costs within the Gulf Cooperation Council region. It also provides alternative routes for cargo movement during periods of geopolitical instability.

King Abdulaziz Port, one of the Kingdom’s main trade gateways, is expected to benefit from improved efficiency and increased competitiveness as a result of the new connection.

The move follows a series of recent initiatives by Mawani, including the addition of new shipping services with major global carriers such as Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, aimed at maintaining trade flows despite ongoing disruptions.

Authorities have also introduced measures to support maritime operations, including expanded port services and temporary regulatory relaxations for shipping documentation.

Industry analysts say the launch reflects both long-term infrastructure planning and a rapid response to current geopolitical pressures, with Saudi Arabia leveraging its existing port network to scale up operations and reinforce its role in regional and global logistics.
