India, Canada sign critical minerals and uranium deals

India and Canada on Monday signed a series of agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation in critical minerals, uranium supply and clean energy development, marking a step forward in bilateral economic ties.

The deals were announced following talks in New Delhi between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Among the key outcomes was an agreement on collaboration in critical minerals — a sector seen as vital for electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies and advanced manufacturing.

The two countries also concluded a deal on the supply of uranium ore concentrate from Canada to India, supporting India’s civilian nuclear energy programme. Canada is one of the world’s leading uranium producers, and the agreement is expected to help ensure a stable fuel supply for India’s growing nuclear power capacity.

In addition, the agreements covered cooperation in technology, clean energy and the promotion of renewable power sources. Both sides expressed interest in expanding collaboration in areas such as solar and wind energy, as well as emerging technologies that support energy transition and sustainable development.

Officials said the new pacts reflect a shared focus on energy security, diversification of supply chains and long-term economic partnership between the two countries.
