Iran must never possess nuclear weapons: German Chancellor

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized on Sunday that Iran must never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, during a phone call with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman, according to a statement from the Chancellor’s office.
Both leaders agreed that the immediate priority is to prevent further escalation between Israel and Iran, amid rising tensions following a series of deadly strikes by both sides. They also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation and long-term peace.
Merz expressed appreciation for Oman’s mediation role in efforts to resolve the ongoing disputes surrounding Iran’s nuclear program. However, he acknowledged that diplomacy has so far failed to halt Iran’s progress toward a possible military nuclear capability.
The sixth round of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks, which was scheduled for Sunday in Muscat, was cancelled following Israel’s recent attacks on Iranian soil.
Chancellor Merz said Iran’s nuclear ambitions will be a top priority at the G7 summit, set to take place in Canada from June 15 to 17. He also reiterated Israel’s right to self-defense, while revealing that Germany has received a request from Israel for firefighting equipment—prompting Berlin to begin immediate preparations to assist.
Calling for restraint, Merz urged Tehran to cease attacks on Israeli civilians and warned against the broader regionalization of the conflict, which could destabilize the Middle East.
Since early Friday, Israel has carried out multiple airstrikes on Iranian territory, targeting nuclear and missile facilities. The attacks resulted in the deaths of senior military officials and scientists, and also hit oil and gas infrastructure.
In response, Iran launched ballistic missiles at several sites inside Israel, reportedly killing three people and injuring more than 170, according to media sources.
