Mongla Port activities accelerated after Padma Bridge opening

Amid import control and inflation_ the Mongla Port_ the second-largest seaport of Bangladesh has seen huge export and import in the last three and a half months in the current fiscal year (2022-23) after the inauguration of Padma Bridge connecting the southern part of the country with capital Dhaka and other parts of the country.

Fertilizer_ wheat_ raw materials of the cement industry_ coal and car import has increased while the export of fish_ shrimp_ crabs_ garments_ jute goods_  fruits_ vegetables_ ceramics_ electrical wire_ mud tally_ betel-nut and others product export has boosted_ an official from Mongla Port Authority (MPA) said.

Besides_ huge machineries_ equipments_ raw materials of some mega projects including those of Rooppur nuclear power plant_ Rampal power plant_ metro rail_ Bangabandhu and  Khanjahan Ali Railway Bridge have been unloaded through the port in last four months_

According to Mongla Custom House_ a total of 4.04 million tonnes of commodities were exported and imported from July 1 to October 16 of FY 2022-23.

Among the imported items_ raw materials of cement industry_ LPG_ coal_ fertilizer_ wheat and raw materials of government s different mega projects are on the top of list.

Ships arrival have enhanced after the inauguration of the Padma Bridge and the government has taken many initiatives to enhance capability of Mongla port_ MPA Chairman Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa told BSS.

Customs officials said that the Mongla Sea Port sees huge import activities compared to exports as the government is importing huge machineries and raw materials for different mega projects and cost of import has reduced after inauguration of the Padma Bridge.
