Hungary to block €90bn EU loan to Ukraine over Druzhba oil transit dispute

Hungary has announced it will block a €90 billion ($106 billion) European Union (EU) loan package for Ukraine until oil deliveries to Hungary through the Druzhba pipeline resume.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Friday that Budapest would withhold support for the financial assistance approved by the European Parliament unless the oil transit issue is resolved.

Posting on the US-based social media platform X, Szijjarto stated that Hungary is blocking the EU loan to Ukraine until oil transit via the Druzhba pipeline is restored.

He accused Ukraine of deliberately suspending oil transit in coordination with Brussels and Hungary’s opposition parties in an attempt to disrupt energy supplies and increase fuel prices ahead of elections.

Szijjarto further claimed that by halting oil flows through the Druzhba pipeline, Ukraine is violating the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and failing to uphold its commitments to the European Union.

He emphasized that Hungary would not yield to what he described as political pressure, linking the restoration of oil transit to Budapest’s approval of the loan package.
