India seeks safe passage for ships amid hormuz tensions
India has urged Iran to ensure the safety of its vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz following a recent firing incident involving Indian ships.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India is in close contact with Iranian authorities and other stakeholders to secure safe transit for its vessels in the region. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that several Indian ships are currently in the Persian Gulf, with 10 vessels already crossing the strait safely and another expected to pass soon.
The development comes after two Indian ships—VLCC Samnar Herald and bulk carrier Jag Arnav—reported coming under fire while transiting the waterway. Both vessels returned to the Persian Gulf, and no injuries were reported among the crew.
India raised the issue strongly with Iran, summoning the Iranian ambassador and expressing deep concern over the safety of commercial shipping.
Officials said that while most Indian-flagged vessels have successfully crossed the strait, the two ships involved in the incident remain in the Persian Gulf after turning back.
