Bangladesh moves toward greater US market access

Bangladesh has taken a major step toward strengthening its trade partnership with the United States, with discussions opening the possibility of wider market entry and support for the country’s key textile and apparel sector.

During a visit to Washington DC, National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman asked US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer to consider reducing Bangladesh’s current 20 percent reciprocal tariff. Greer agreed to raise the issue with President Donald Trump, potentially aligning Bangladesh’s rate with those of regional competitors.

Talks also produced a new proposal that could offer Bangladesh tariff-free access to the US market for textile and apparel exports, equal in volume to the country’s purchases of US cotton and man-made fiber inputs. The system would be measured on a square-meter basis and designed to benefit both US suppliers and Bangladeshi manufacturers.

Officials say the approach reinforces bilateral trade ties, supports workers on both sides and reflects positive momentum in US-Bangladesh economic relations. The agreement marks a promising shift for Bangladesh’s future global trade position.
