US to impose new tariffs on lumber and home hoods starting October 14

President Donald Trump announced Monday that a new round of tariffs on lumber and related imports will take effect October 14.

According to a White House proclamation, imports of softwood lumber will face a 10 percent global tariff. The administration also set a 25 percent tariff on upholstered furniture, which is scheduled to rise to 30 percent on January 1. The heaviest hit will be home renovation materials, with kitchen cabinets and vanities facing a 25 percent tariff, increasing to 50 percent at the start of next year.

Some trade partners, including the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Japan, will receive reduced rates under existing agreements with the US.

The move comes despite widespread criticism of tariffs from small businesses, lawmakers, and international partners. Legal challenges are also underway, with the US Supreme Court scheduled to hear arguments on November 5 regarding the legality of Trump’s global duties.

In a fact sheet accompanying the announcement, the administration defended the measures as necessary for national security. It argued that heavy reliance on foreign suppliers for lumber creates “vulnerabilities to disruptions” affecting both civilian construction and military infrastructure.

The administration added that countries engaging in trade talks with Washington may be able to negotiate alternatives to the planned increases.
