Onion imports from India resume through Bhomra land port

Onion imports from India resumed yesterday through Bhomra land port in Satkhira after a five-month suspension, officials confirmed.

By Sunday evening, 202 metric tons of Indian onions had entered Bangladesh via the port, according to Bhomra customs authorities. An additional nine trucks were waiting on the Indian side at Gojadanga to cross over.

The resumption of imports has restored activity among port workers. Rice imports from India are also expected to follow soon, port officials said.

“After five months, onion imports have finally restarted,” said Abu Hasan, president of the Bhomra Clearing and Forwarding Agents Association. “If imports continue steadily, onion prices in the local market should come down.”

M. Mizanur Rahman, revenue officer at Bhomra land port, said the last shipment of onions through the port had arrived on March 27.
