Trump proposes 50% increase in US defence budget to $1.5tn

President Donald Trump has called for a substantial rise in the United States defence budget, proposing that military spending for the 2027 financial year be increased by about 50 per cent to $1.5 trillion, up from roughly $901 billion currently planned, saying the world is facing “very troubled and dangerous times.”

Trump announced the proposal in a post on Truth Social, describing the higher allocation as necessary to build what he termed a “Dream Military” capable of keeping the country safe against any adversary. He claimed the jump in spending could be supported by heightened tariff revenue generated under his administration.

The plan comes amid a backdrop of heightened geopolitical tensions, including recent military actions in Latin America and discussions of strategic moves involving Greenland and other regions.

Alongside the budget call, Trump criticised defence contractors for stock buybacks and high executive pay, threatening to limit government business with firms that fail to prioritise production of needed equipment.

Any such increase would require congressional approval and could face political debate in Washington over fiscal priorities and national security strategy.
