US considers military options to acquire Greenland

The Trump administration is exploring options, including using the US military, to acquire Greenland, the White House said Tuesday, signalling increased pressure on the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

“President Trump has made it clear that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority to deter adversaries in the Arctic,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. “Utilising the US military is always an option at the commander-in-chief’s disposal.”

Trump reiterated his desire for Greenland, calling it “so strategic,” while homeland security adviser Stephen Miller questioned Denmark’s control over the island.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that US threats could jeopardize NATO, a position echoed by European leaders, who stated Greenland belongs to its people and Denmark.

Top US lawmakers from both parties dismissed the idea of a military takeover, stressing respect for Denmark’s sovereignty and treaty obligations.

Under a 75-year-old defense agreement, the US already maintains the only military base in Greenland, though its Arctic presence has dropped from over 10,000 soldiers during the Cold War to fewer than 200 today.
