Nobel Peace Prize cannot be transferred, committee says
The Norwegian Nobel Institute has confirmed that a Nobel Peace Prize cannot be transferred, after Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado suggested she might give her 2025 award to US President Donald Trump.
In a statement on Friday, the institute said the rules are unambiguous: once a winner is announced, the prize cannot be revoked, shared, or handed to another person, and the decision remains permanent.
Machado received the Peace Prize for championing democratic rights and pushing for a peaceful transition from authoritarian rule to democracy in Venezuela.
Speaking to Fox News on Monday, Machado said giving the prize to Trump would be a gesture of gratitude from Venezuelans for the US military operation in their country.
The US raid on January 3 led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
Asked whether he would accept the prize if Machado attempted to pass it on, Trump said he had heard about her remarks and that it “would be a great honor.”
