Taiwan says to reach broad trade deal understanding with US

Taiwan says it has come to a broad agreement with the United States on a new trade deal after several months of negotiations.

In a statement on Tuesday, Taiwan’s Office of Trade Negotiations said both sides share a “general consensus” on major issues, including mutual tariff cuts and assurances that neither country will add extra trade barriers.

The negotiators also said the goal is to secure favorable treatment for Taiwan under the US Section 232 rules, which can impose tariffs for national security reasons.

Officials described the talks as productive and said progress is being made toward a final agreement.
