Experts warn Dhaka airport fire may cause over $1bn in losses for Bangladesh

Experts warn Bangladesh could face losses exceeding $1 billion following the massive fire that tore through the logistics area of Dhaka’s main airport on Saturday, severely disrupting one of the country’s busiest trade hubs.

The blaze, which raged for 27 hours before being brought under control, destroyed large quantities of garments, fabrics, chemicals, and other export goods. Business groups say the damage could threaten future trade opportunities, as many of the lost materials included vital samples for potential buyers.

Bangladesh, the world’s second-largest apparel exporter after China, earns about $40 billion annually from its garment sector, which accounts for more than 10 percent of its GDP. The International Air Express Association of Bangladesh and the Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association both estimate total losses from the fire could surpass $1 billion.

Local media reported at least 35 people were injured while fighting the flames. The fire also forced temporary flight suspensions and disrupted airport operations during the crucial pre-Christmas export period.

Saturday’s inferno was the third major fire in Bangladesh in a week, following deadly blazes at a warehouse and a garment factory earlier. Investigators are still determining the cause, though speculation has spread online about possible links among the incidents. The interim government has promised swift action if any evidence of sabotage or arson is uncovered.
