Canada says US trade talks to resume ‘When appropriate'
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated on Sunday that Canada will restart trade discussions with the United States “when it’s appropriate,” emphasizing that there is currently no urgent matter requiring dialogue with President Donald Trump.
The U.S. had suspended talks last month following an anti-tariff advertisement released by Ontario’s provincial government.
“We are focused on Canada’s future and exploring new partnerships. Conversations with the president will likely take place within the next two weeks,” Carney said on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Johannesburg. “We will re-engage when the timing is right.”
Carney stressed his willingness to continue dialogue, noting, “I don’t have a pressing issue to discuss with the president at the moment. When the U.S. is ready to resume trade discussions, we will be ready to talk.”
Canada is seeking a deal to reduce the import tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles imposed by the Trump administration.
