S. Korea hits record semiconductor exports in August

South Korea posted its highest-ever monthly semiconductor exports in August, defying mounting trade pressures from the United States, government data showed Monday.

Chip exports surged past $15 billion, up nearly 30% from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The growth was fueled by robust demand from China and the exemption of semiconductors from U.S. tariff measures.

Other major sectors also delivered strong performances. Auto exports rose to $5.5 billion, while shipbuilding shipments hit $3.14 billion—both setting records for the month of August.

Thanks to the momentum across key industries, South Korea’s overall exports reached $58.4 billion, the highest level ever for the month.

However, shipments to the United States fell 12% year-on-year to $8.74 billion, weighed down by tariffs targeting steel, autos, and machinery. Seoul initially faced a sweeping 25% tariff imposed by Washington, but later secured a deal lowering the rate to 15% on most goods. Still, certain exports, including steel and aluminum, remain subject to steep 50% duties.

Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan credited the export boom to the resilience and competitiveness of Korean firms. “These achievements reflect the determination of our companies to expand exports despite difficult external conditions such as U.S. tariff policies,” Kim said.

He added that the government will roll out a three-pronged support package in early September to help small and mid-sized exporters absorb the impact of U.S. tariffs.
