Bangladesh, US resume tariff agreement talks in Washington

Bangladesh and the United States have kicked off the second round of negotiations on the proposed Agreement on Reciprocal Tariff in Washington, DC. The talks, which began today (9 July), will continue through 11 July.

The discussions were initiated following an invitation from the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), making Bangladesh one of the first nations to re-enter talks after US President Donald Trump sent a letter on 7 July to the leaders of 14 countries impacted by the new US tariff policy.

Sheikh Bashiruddin, commerce adviser to the Bangladesh government, is leading the country’s delegation on the ground in Washington. National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman is expected to participate virtually from Dhaka. Other key members of the delegation include the Commerce Secretary and an Additional Commerce Secretary, all present in the US capital for the negotiations.

Commerce ministry officials say the aim is to build on the positive momentum from the initial round of talks held on 27 June, which both sides had termed "fruitful."
