Pakistan-Bangladesh explore new air links to strengthen trade and relations

Pakistan and Bangladesh are considering the use of Fifth Freedom Flight arrangements to improve direct air connectivity and boost trade and diplomatic ties. Under this system, international airlines that already fly to both countries, such as carriers from the UAE or China, could operate connecting routes between Islamabad and Dhaka.

Bangladesh officials said their national carrier, Biman, currently does not have enough aircraft to operate direct flights. Encouraging external airlines could reduce travel difficulties and support business and cargo movement, especially for perishable goods.

Envoys from Bangladesh expressed optimism about renewing cooperation with Pakistan, emphasizing the need to move beyond historical differences and focus on practical areas such as trade, education partnerships, and cultural engagement.

Bangladesh can offer pharmaceuticals and electronics to Pakistan, while Pakistan has strong products like sports goods, medical instruments, rice, and agricultural goods. Both sides see potential for mutual investment, particularly in fisheries and food processing, due to growing demand in both countries.

Improving shipping routes is also seen as important. Pakistan’s ports and Bangladesh’s developing port infrastructure could support expanded trade access. Bangladesh could help Pakistan access Southeast Asia, while Pakistan could help Bangladesh connect with Central Asia and the Middle East.

The discussion highlighted shared cultural ties and the importance of promoting dialogue and cooperation, especially for younger generations. The envoys stressed looking ahead rather than focusing on past divisions, with a goal of rebuilding confidence and strengthening regional connections.
